Tape Ball

For pack meeting this month I need a little time to talk with the parents; which means I need an activity that will keep the boys interest as well as their siblings, but that my 14 year old will be capable of keeping control of.  TAPE BALL to the rescue!  They loved it!!!  I forgot take my camera I wanted my daughter to take pictures of the boys playing, but they had a great time!!  The only down side was that there wasn't enough time to get all the way though the ball, if I were to do it again I would make 2 or 3 smaller balls.  (The remainder of the ball did not go to waste- enter a dad with a pocket knife!  The rest of the goodies were retrieved while awards were presented.)

For those of you who have never heard of tape ball you take tape, I used masking and duct tape on the inside and clear packaging tape on the outside.  It really is simple make a ball of tape with prizes taped inside, small toys and candy.  (When we do this for holidays we put in money, giant pairs of underwear that sort of thing).  Have everyone who is playing get in a big circle, one player gets the tape ball and the player in front of them a pair of dice.  The player with the ball removes tape as fast as they can and anything they dislodge is theirs to keep.  The player with the dice is trying to roll doubles as quickly as they can so they get a turn.  As soon as they get doubles they pass the dice to the person next to them and then they get the tape ball.

  1. I like the tape ball. I'll probably do that the next time it's my turn to come up with the den game.

I saw your post on award cards. Our council provides cards for belt loops and webelos badges (we have to buy them, they are like 10 cents) however I always wondered why there wasn't something for the other awards like compass points and conservation awards too. I usually just end up stapling the award to an index card and scribbling name and date on it, Your idea is nice, but I'm a tightwad and won't spend the money to run my printer!

  4. This is awesome!! We used to do a variation where you wrapped a gift with tons of newspaper and the kids had to wear work gloves while they had their turn unwrapping. This is way better! Thanks for the idea!

    1. That is the same way I played as a kid. My mother used twine, duct tape, yarn, and she went through at least 5 Sunday papers. She use to take this to camp. We used gloves, work goggles, and a silly hate(this was in the early 80's). SO much fun! I have modified it to be used in class to work on multiplication facts.

  5. @ Deanna- I'm not sure how many prizes I put into it at LEAST 100, between the candy and $$ store toys. It lasted about 10 minutes.

  6. Is it one continuous piece of tape or lots of individual pieces... does it even matter?

  7. There are a few different kinds of tape I started with masking then packaging, then duct, more masking etc. It was continuous until I switched tape type.

  8. Do you have the kids sit or stand in the circle?

  9. Do the prizes get ruined by the tape?

  10. I didn't have any trouble with things getting ruined. I kept quite a few of the toys in the packaging or covered them with plastic wrap first.

  12. How big was this tape ball? Was it the size of a basketball or soccer ball?

    1. Oh dear let me remember- I would say a bit smaller than a soccer ball or volleyball. It weighed a TON!

  13. Very cool. Going to see if I can do this with my class this week. I have some old tape that I'd certainly like to use.

  17. Hi! I'm a committee chairperson for a non-LDS pack. We were just trying to figure out what to do with the kids when we have our round-up. It's a time to talk to the parents, and that can be hard to do with a bunch of boys running around. So, I'm going to make a tape ball and ask a couple of our local Boy Scouts to be in charge of the game for us. Thanks so much for the idea!
